Waiting in line with all the old folks.

Make my sushi, sushi men!

Crab brain salad, anyone?

He knows he's getting his photo taken.

Lunch set - ¥1680

Lunch set - ¥2100

You’d expect that living in Japan you’d be eating sushi every other day. However I find that most of my friends and I maybe eat it a couple of times a month. It just seems more common to eat ramen for a quick feed or go out to an izakaya for a group dinner. Or my favourite - Tenya for some greasy, greasy tempura – which is actually my Obaachan’s favourite restaurant too. Runs in the family, I suppose.

Anyway, it’s September and it’s still really hot so mid-week, lunch time sushi seemed perfect. Midori Sushi has a reputation with both Japanese and foreigners to be good quality and gentle to the wallet. The ladies of the group ordered the ¥1680 lunch set which came with a chawanmushi, salad, miso soup, dessert, green tea and a really big platter of sushi. The boys ordered the larger lunch set for ¥2100. Lunch time beers (if you’re feeling that way inclined) are a mere ¥315. Other sets are available with slightly different combinations, and you can order nigiri and other sushi individually too.

My particular platter came with your usual salmon, tamago, ikura, maguro and tuna maki. But in addition to my familiar sushi friends came uni. I used to not like uni (sea urchin) at all but Midori Sushi made a convert out of me. So if you’re adverse to uni like I was, try it here and see if it changes your mind. If not, I apologise in advance for making you gag in front of your friends/co-workers/family/lover (but at least you tried it).

I was so full after lunch, that I almost had myself convinced that I probably wouldn’t have to eat again for the rest of the week.*

The Umegaoka branch is the original store, but there are a few others around Tokyo – Ginza and Shibuya. Due to its popularity, expect to wait a bit, but you know it’s generally pretty good if you have to line up for it.

I’m definitely going to eat wayyy more sushi from now on.

* This is clearly not the case as I just ate dinner before I wrote this post.
