I cop a lot of slack for always choosing Marigold for yum cha. But Marigold, for me, is old faithful. My parents weren’t exactly adventurous when it came to restaurants when I was a kid – it was either Red Rooster (Mum’s choice), Japanese restaurants owned by my Dad’s friends (Dad’s choice) or Marigold.
I like Marigold because it’s consistent, always seems to end up the same price per head ($25) and the dumplings are plentiful. Sure, I’m well aware that there are many great yum cha places around town, but you’ll probably end up finding me drinking Coke (yum cha is the only place I seem to drink Coke) and eating my weight in dumplings at yum cha on any given weekend. Yes, I’ll be there this Sunday.
